Happy Earth Day, Philadelphia!
In Honor of Earth Day: Recycling & Composting Services in Philadelphia
“I’m a city boy. In the big cities they’ve set it up so you can go to a park and be in a miniature countryside, but in the countryside they don’t have any patches of big city, so I get very homesick.”
Lucky for us in Philadelphia we have so many beautiful parks, public green spaces & greening efforts. There are many organizations working on even more green spaces, expanding our parks & planting more trees.
The easiest way in Philadelphia is recycling. Get a comprehensive list of Philadelphia’s recycling services including what can go in your blue bin. If you don’t have a blue bin or it has “disappeared” get one at your local recycling center. Call first for availability. If you live in a condo building or work in an office building that does not recycle and you want to spearhead the campaign check out the Commercial Recycling Advocacy page.

Want to Do A Little More?
If you cook or garden a lot & hate to see the scraps sent off to the landfill or wasted down your garbage disposal composting could be your next green step. Many people don’t want to go through the hassle or have enough space to compost themselves. These local businesses make it easy on you. Check out Bennett Compost: for $15.00 a month you can get a weekly pick up. The compost is then sold in local businesses or used in community gardens. In the spring members can get up to 10 gallons for free & they receive discounts when purchasing. If you produce food waste on a larger scale check out Philly Compost which is geared towards a commercial clientele. If you don’t produce that much food waste (which most of us don’t) this is still a fabulous website for information on why to compost & how to DIY.
One Last Tip
Stop getting circulars delivered to your home! Most of us find our menus, local restaurants & who delivers via a smart phone. Fill out your no circular form, get your sticker, slap it on your door & never have to pick up a menu or circular you won’t read ever again.
These are easy ways to do your part. Enjoy the beautiful day!
