Spotted All Over Philly: Quartz Countertops

Quartz is One of the Newer Materials We Have Been Seeing in New Construction & Renovations

Quartz is a relatively new material for counter tops.  It is a man made engineered stone with a composition of (generally) 90% ground quartz & 8-10% pigments & resins.  It is sold under brand names including Silestone, Caesarstone, Cambria, Zodiaq, Avanza & Technistone.  Angelo’s Granite & Marble in South Philadelphia has a great selection.

It is becoming extremely popular due to it’s borderline indestructible nature & extreme low maintenance.  I love seeing it in the city because I think it has a very clean, almost industrial look, that meshes well with the more modern touches we see such as glass mosaic tile, stainless steel & wrought iron railings.

Pros:

Very hard & durable
Non porous (red wine stains, anyone??)
Scratch resistant
Stain resistant
Sealing not required
Comes in a wide range of colors
Easy to clean
Stays cool to the touch…perfect for rolling out pastry, homemade pasta etc.

Cons:

Man made
Expensive
Not as tolerant of heat as other stones
Large counter tops will more then likely have seams

How to Maintain:

Wipe frequently with a damp cloth & mild dishwash liquid.  Rinse with a clean damp cloth.  DON’T USE BLEACH OR ANY PRODUCTS CONTAINING BLEACH!  It can ruin the color of the stone.

Check It Out in Application

Love the clean bright white industrial kitchen look here.  The gloss of the counters add a dose of glam the prevent it from being cold.

Love this contemporary kitchen & think the quartz coupled with the espresso cabinetry is so warm.
This kitchen was given opulent look of a thick slab of marble without the price tag or high maintenance.
I love this clean thin gray slab that perfectly accentuates the marble back splash, white cabinetry, minimalist fixture & the pops of green.  Such a soothing space.
