Philadelphia’s Own Real Life Princess
East Falls Native the Star of From Philadelphia to Monaco: Grace Kelly – Behind the Icon
The rise of Grace Kelly is legendary & reads like a fairy tale. This is the story of how a girl from East Falls catapulted to fame; starting as a Hollywood starlet & ending as the princess of Monaco.
Kelly was the daughter of rower & three time Olympic gold medal winner, John “Jack” Kelly. Kelly grew up at 3901 Henry Avenue in East Falls; a fitting location for the athlete to set up his family home. Kelly’s father eventually became a building tycoon; running the largest construction company on the East Coast. Not exactly a rags to riches story as her family was quite wealthy (a 2 million USD dowry accompanied her marriage to the prince) but certainly not the royal lineage one would expect. Nevertheless, Grace Kelly was beautiful, ethereal, impeccably styled & by all accounts had a heart of gold. Like a good Philly girl, she never forgot her roots. She summered at the Kelly home in Ocean City with her children, visited with her family in East Falls & was involved in many humanitarian causes.
Fashionistas, history lovers & movie buffs can see her life on display from October 28th, 2013 through January 26th, 2014. The collection includes her Academy Award as well as the dress she wore on the night of acceptance, letters, playbills, the original “It” bag an Hermes “Kelly” handbag that disguised her pregnancy from the paparazzi & many other personal artifacts.
