Working Towards Equality & Honoring Women in Their Many Roles
We’ve come a long way but there is still work to do. Here are two women who are working on turning stereotypes upside down starting with little girls.
Debbie Sterling GoldieBlox
Debbie Sterling is a Stanford educated engineer who was frustrated with the number of women represented in the Stanford engineering program. She started her company Goldieblox to inspire young girls to become engineers through innovative construction toys designed from the female perspective.
Sheryl Sandberg Facebook Executive
A picture is worth a thousand words. Facebook executive Sheryl Sandberg is forging a partnership with her non profit organization Lean In & Getty images to change the way working women & their families are portrayed in stock images. She wants to change the stereotypical visual imagery associated with working women. The article, Feminism, According to Stock Photography, really hit the nail on the head. Lean In is an organization committed to offering women ongoing support & inspiration in order to achieve leadership roles. Sheryl Sandberg also wrote the book Lean In: Women, Work & the Will to Lead.
“The story of women’s struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights” Gloria Steinem
