Opening Night At The Oval — A Magic Carpet Awaits

a summer revamp on philly’s very own “avenue des champs-elysees”

Philly is loving the pop up park this summer. Tonight the Oval on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway officially debuts its summer make over this evening complete with an art installation, a beer garden & plenty of entertainment. The Parkway, aptly named after Philly’s favorite & most notable resident Benjamin Franklin, was designed at the turn of the 20th century & modeled after the famed Champs Elysees in Paris as a wide tree lined avenue. Some of Philadelphia’s most impressive buildings & renowned cultural institutions can be found nestled amongst the lush greenery.

At the apex of the Parkway under the imposing presence of the Philadelphia Museum of Art sits 8 highly underutilized acres known as Eakins Oval. Philadelphia is eager to rescue this swath of the Parkway from an unattractive asphalt parking lot into an interactive public space with the second annual pop up park at the Oval. In the summer of 2013 the Oval was transformed into a beach. This year the transformation has a Magic Carpet theme. From the Oval’s website:

MAGIC CARPET at The Oval: Commissioned by the Association for Public Art (aPA), Philadelphia-based multimedia artist Candy Coated (formerly Candy Depew) will transform The Oval into a magical environment of color, pattern, illusion, and movement with Magic Carpet. Her exuberant design will include 3-D illusion art, brilliantly colored sandboxes, and her signature decorative motifs rendered in vinyl, among other attractions. Magic Carpet will be an enchanting place, an adventure land, right in the middle of the city.
