Fishtown is one of the “river wards”, which means that it runs along the Delaware River.  At the beginning Fishtown was home to…..you guessed it…fisherman & was the center of the shad fishing industry.  Hence the name Fishtown.  It is located just Northeast of Northern Liberties & East of Olde Kensington.  The boundaries of this neighborhood are a little different as when it was developed it wasn’t developed on the grid system; it looks more like a triangle with a lot of small narrow one way streets that intersect at odd angles.  This can make it difficult to get around for newcomers.  There is a lot of new construction being built in this neighborhood as well as renovations of existing homes & factories.  It has been growing in popularity over the years & there is plenty of nightlife, bars, restaurants, cafes & cute little shops.  The residents are serviced by the Fishtown Neighbors Association.

What Are the Boundaries?

Laurel to the South, E. York to the North, the Delaware River to the East & Frankford or Front to the West.  See the map for more detail as there are little twists & turns.

Restaurants, Bars & Nightlife

So much to do over here!  Frankford Hall is a partially open air beer garden in an awesome space.  They have huge beers, ping pong tables & as it’s partially open air there are roaring fire pits to keep you warm in the winter.  Barcade is exactly what you guessed…a bar arcade.  There are quite a few restuarant/gastropubs such as Kraftwork, Ekta, Ida Mae’s Bruncherie & Bottle Bar East.  Great bars such as the Barbary, Lloyd Whiskey Bar, Interstate Draft House & Starboard Side Tavern.  Catch live music at Johnny Brenda’s or Kung Fu Necktie.  If you get bored exploring this neighborhood you are only a couple El stops from Northern Liberties or Old City.

Grocery Shopping

The easiest full service grocery store is the Super Fresh in Northern Liberties at 2nd & Girard.  They also have the state store on the ground floor & parking.

Farmer’s Market

Check out Greensgrow farm in season or go to the Fair Food Farmstand at the Reading Terminal Market.

Shopping

There are some really cute stores in Fishtown.  Penn Treaty Treasure, Craft Foundry, Adorn Gallery, Smoke Shops & Bicycle shops galore.  One of my favorite spots in Fishtown is Fasone Lighting.  They have a ridiculous selection of antique lighting.  So unique & original & the proprietor is great!

Green Space

Penn Treaty Park is in Fishtown.   It is huge!  It is clean, right on the river, has an awesome view of the bridge & the water where you can watch boats passing by, you can bring your dog, play frisbee or take your kids to play on the playground.

Parking & Public Transportation

In Fishtown you can hop on the El which can get you all over the city.  There are buses….check out septa.org for more information.  It’s also relatively easy to park over here.
