About

Also called Southwest Center City, this neighborhood lies just South of Rittenhouse Square & Fitler Square & is named for the now defunct hospital that used to lie at the northern edges of it’s border.  Over the past 10 years or so a huge surge in development coupled with close proximity to Center City created a housing boom.  A glut of dilapidated older housing stock & vacant lots held opportunities for development & many new construction homes & condos have been built along with renovations of existing homes.  This neighborhood is serviced by SOSNA.

Restaurants, Bars & Nightlife

Many residents enjoy the amenities of Center City which are in close walking distance.  A few neighborhood places have also opened up to cater to the demand of all the new residents.  A few that come to mind are Sidecar, Resurrection Ale House, Grace Tavern, Betty’s Speakeasy & Robert’s Twi Lite Lounge.  Many of these are located on Gray’s Ferry Avenue near the Toll Brothers Naval Square gated community.

Grocery Shopping

This neighborhood has the Big 8 on Washington Ave. which does have it’s own lot & from what I understand a half decent selection.  It is close to the Whole Foods & Super Fresh on South Street in Bella Vista.  The Italian Market is also nearby.

Farmer’s Market

Every Friday from 3-7 during Summer & Fall a Farmer’s Market sets up at the Julian Abele park at 22nd & Montrose.  This market does not take credit cards & this neighborhood has street parking.

Green Space

There are two parks right in the neighborhood, the Julian Abele Park at 22nd & Montrose & Marian Andersen Park & Recreation Center at 17th & Fitzwater.   If you are looking for a place take to take your pooch there is a dog run at the Schuylkill River Park at 25th & Lombard in Fitler Square.  This is one of the best in the city & there is a run for large dogs & a separate one for small dogs.

Public Transportation & Parking

A lot of the street parking is by permit only so be careful if you are visiting friends in the neighborhood.  There are not many privately owned lots, however, there are a few close to South Street.  The Broad Street subway line has a stop at South/Lombard & just past Washington Avenue is the Ellsworth Federal line.  There are a lot of bus routes that service this neighborhood.  SEPTA’s website will have the best information depending on where you want to go!
