Logan Sqauare is a neighborhood named after the public green space Logan Circle.  This neighborhood consists mostly of town homes, apartments & condos  as well as historical buildings & museums.   Until the early 19th century this area was used for public executions & as a burial plot.  In the 20’s a French landscape architect designed the space as an offshoot of the Benjamin Franklin Parway & modeled it off of the Place de la Concordia in Paris.  Today it is surrounded by beautiful buildings such as The Free Library, the Academy of Natural Sciences, the Franklin Institute, Moore College of Art & Design & the Roman Catholic Cathedral-Basilica of Sts. Peter & Paul.  The Swann Memorial Fountain at the center was designed by Alexander Stirling Calder with the help of Wilson Eyre & is one of my favorite fountains in the city.  Interesting art fact:  the Calder’s are highly represented on the parkway.  The mobile at the entrance of the Philadelphia Musuem of Art is by Stirling Calder’s son also Alexander Calder.  Stirling Calder’s father, Alexander Milne Calder, designed the William Penn statue that stands proudly atop City Hall!
