Manayunk is located on the banks of the Schuylkill River just Northwest of Philadelphia.  This is a very old neighborhood originally settled by the Lenape tribe of Native Americans then deeded over to William Penn in the late 1600’s.  The name is derived from the Lenape language which literally translates to “place to drink” in reference to the river.  It is still known as a place to drink, however, the drinking is not done on the banks of the Schuylkill it is done in the numerous pubs & restaurants dotting Main Street.  One of Manayunk’s claims to fame is hosting the annual bike race where athletes from around the world compete.  It is one of the more difficult courses due to Manayunk’s steep hills.  Historically, this was a working class neighborhood due to the numerous textile mills along the canal.  This resulted in the housing stock closer to Main Street housing the employees of the mills being smaller 2 & 3 story homes.  As you ascend the hills the homes are much more grand, mostly in the Victorian style & are on larger plots of land.  This means Manayunk has something for everyone in terms of housing.  There are condo developments, new construction homes, large old stone homes & plenty of traditional row homes with 2 & 3 stories.

Main Street is dotted with nightlife, restaurants & bars.  Cooper’s, Winnie’s Le Bus, Jake’s, Derek’s, Bourbon Blue, Agiato & Zesty’s just to name a few.

Grocery Shopping

There are two small markets on or just off Main Street…the Main Street Market & Palm Tree Gourmet.  You could head into Chestnut Hill & hit the coop, Top of the Hill & Penzey’s Spices.  There is an Acme, a Shop Rite & a Super Fresh along Ridge.  You are also rather close to Ardmore for the Ardmore Farmer’s Market & Trader Joe’s.

Farmer’s Market

There is a farmer’s market on Saturday mornings that sets up in Pretzel Park.  There is another one also held on Saturday mornings in Chestnut Hill with dairy, locally made cheese, Kennett Square mushrooms & tons of local produce.

Shopping

Main Street is home to some great boutiques like Nicole Miller, TAG Denim & the Attic.  They also cater to the athletic amongst us with Bryn Mawr Running Company & Cadence cycling shop.  This is a popular destination for furniture with Dwelling, Pompanoosuc Mills, Somnia, DIGS, Nadeau & the enormous Consignment Marketplace.

Green Space

Pretzel Park has a great dog park, the Manayunk Park has a small playground & the walkway along the canal is popular for bikers as you can get all the way to Valley Forge park or to Center City/Kelly Drive.

Parking & Public Transportation

There are a couple of bus routes that service Manayunk.  The R6 connects Norristown to Center City.  Check out Septa’s website for more information.
