19147 is a very large & very popular zip code which is home to a variety of different neighborhoods each with their own flavor.  One of the darlings of 19147,  Passyunk Square is bound by Washington Ave. to the North, Tasker to the South, 6th to the East & Broad to the West.  The civic association that services this neighborhood is the Passyunk Square Civic Association.

Restaurants, Bars & Nightlife

Home to Pat’s, Geno’s, Underdog, Termini Bros (beat the Christmas lines by your awesome location), Mr. Joe’s Cafe, Green Eggs Cafe, Victor Cafe (where you will be serenaded). Karina’s, Da Vinci’s, Birra, Fond, Stateside, Cosmi’s Deli, August, the Triangle Tavern, the Pub on Passyunk East as well as a number of taquerias & places to get pho.  Get your caffeine fix at B2 or Black & Brew.  Black & Brew even boasts a fabulous mosaic by Philadelphia’s very own Isaiah Zagar of the South Street Magic Garden fame.  Needless to say you will never go hungry or get bored of the selection.  There are many more restaurants where you can sit down for full dinner service or grab something quick.  We would love to know what your neighborhood favorites are!

Food Shopping

This neighborhood boasts an actual grocery store (Acme) with a PARKING LOT!  Score!  Another grocery store which has parking is the First Oriental Market at 6th & Washington.  Adventurous chefs should head here A.S.A.P.!  Ippolito’s Seafood is a hidden gem at 13th & Dickinson.  They service a lot of the restaurants in the city so the selection is fresh & delicious.  They have a knowledgeable & helpful staff, a great selection of fish & home made items as well as some pantry items that pair well with seafood.  It’s a great place to get seafood & whenever I mention it to clients & friends no one seems to know about it!  You are steps away from the famous Italian Market which is always an experience!  We have a full page on this as a sentence just does not do this historical market justice.

Farmer’s Market

The farmer’s market sets up in season at the Singing Fountain on 11th & Passyunk on Wednesday’s from 3-7.

Shopping

1504 Hardware is conveniently located right on the Ave.  Small hardware stores tend to have a more knowledgeable staff then you find at the big box stores & it feels good to help a local business thrive.  If you want to green up your home whether with pots, window boxes or you are lucky enough to have a real backyard space Urban Jungle can help you with that.  A lot more shopping is located right up Passyunk Ave. in East Passyunk Crossing.

Green Space

The one thing we miss out on at times as urban dwellers is green space.  However, it’s time consuming to maintain your own.  Urban dwellers have the ability to meander out of their homes & go to a public park that someone ELSE maintains!  Passyunk Square is home to Columbus Square formerly known as Passyunk Square Park, Capitolo Playground, the petite yet charming Gold Star Park & the Singing Fountain on Passyunk Avenue right where Passyunk Square meets East Passyunk Crossing.  Looking for a spot for Fido to socialize?  Columbus Square has a dog park!

Parking & Public Transportation

This is a typical South Philadelphia neighborhood with tight streets.  Hopefully your parallel parking skills are up to snuff!  If you do drive here & don’t want to drive around looking for a spot there are inexpensive lots off 9th & Washington.  There is a municipal lot on 12th by Passyunk Square Park.  If you are looking for a place to wash your car, the only spot I go to in the city is Car WASHington on 11th & Washington.  Clever name & very fairly priced.  Get the special!  South Philadelphia has great public transportation options.  There are two subway stops on Broad Street; the Tasker/Morris & Ellsworth/Federal.  The 23 bus runs 24 hours a day up & down 11th & 12th.  It can take you down to Oregon Ave., through Center City to North Philadelphia & all the way down Germantown Ave. to Chestnut Hill should you want to make a day trip without your vehicle.  ParkOps offers valet options on Passyunk Ave. on Thursday, Friday & Saturday nights.  It is $8 with restaurant validation & $15 without validation.  There are two stands: one is located at the Singing Fountain at 11th & Tasker & the other is located in front of El Zarape at 1648 E. Passyunk Avenue.
